About Baconton

The City of Baconton, known as the birthplace of Georgia's paper-shell pecan industry, is located in Mitchell County at the convenient intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and State Road 93, just 16 miles from Albany and 278 miles south of Atlanta.

Baconton was named after Major Robert James Bacon, who, along with his wife, settled in the area in 1858. Major Bacon purchased 4,000 acres of land for $4,000 and became a prominent figure in the community. He was a successful cotton planter and served as a director of the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railroad Company, which later became the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. During the construction of a railroad connecting Albany and Thomasville, Major Bacon granted the right-of-way through his plantation. In 1869, the engineers, without his knowledge, named the station on his land Baconton, in his honor.

Baconton was officially incorporated in 1903. The city's charter, No. 363, was granted by the State of Georgia under House Bill No. 475 and later revised in 1953. The city encompasses one square mile, with the old town well serving as its center.
